Granny Square Afghan … WIP and Crochet Dishcloths

Granny Squares

I have made 4 of these granny squares so far. It took me a while to find a granny square pattern that I liked and was able to understand! I am still a new crocheter and am learning slowly. But so far so good! I am using a natural cotton yarn available at Wal-Mart. I love the feel of 100% cotton and thought it would make a lovely afghan. I am so excited about it! I figure if I do one grannysquare everyday or so that in a couple of months I will have enough to make a nice throw for the living room.Oh and I am using the pattern that I found here: Lisa’s Granny Square

Q: Dear Melissa,
I found this site through A Virtuous Woman and I LOVE them both. You’re a very smart woman and I’m learning a lot from you, thank you for sharing your giftBasic Crchet Dishcloths! I read that you were crocheting dish cloths, I’d never heard of such a thing! What pattern and yarn do you u
se? Enjoy your summer. Blessings to you,Mykal and the children.

A: Leigh,
I wanted to thank you for your kind words! I have so enjoyed making my own dishcloths. They are a lot of fun and can be completed in one sitting once you get used to crocheting (if you are a beginner). In fact these are perfect for the beginner crocheter. I have begun to teach my 11 year old and she recently made her first dishcloth! She was so proud. We plan to make lots of these to place in her hope chest… and for my other girls as well.
I have tried a number of different patterns, but my personal favorite is a simple basic pattern:

Chain 24. Step #1 SC all the way across. Chain one. Turn. Step #2 Repeat until dishcloth is a square. Step #3 SC in same corner and all the way across to next corner. SC three times in corner. Step #4 Repeat Step #3 two more times. Step #5 Repeat Step #3 & 4 one or two or three more times. Step #6 Fasten off.

For fun you can change yarn color at Step #3 to make the border rows contrast. I like to 100% cotton yarn for dishcloths. You can find basic cotton yarns at any Wal-Mart or fabic store.

The Granny Squares are beautiful!!! You should be so proud of yourself. I’m trying to crochet a dolls dress for my 6 yr old daughter from a kit I got at WalMart. The instructions are a COMPLETE MYSTERY!!! Can’t wait to get started on a dishcloth, looks much more do-able. Thank you for the instructions and for such wonderful websites. Leigh

    Melissa,
what a wonderful idea! Do you just put the dish towels in with all your other towels? I think I will get right to it!
