Last week, we had so many technical problems with the website crashing, that I was not able to announce the winner of our Apron Memories Contest! It was not the easiest decision to make. There were several stories that I especially enjoyed! However, here I am presenting my favorite and I hope it reminds you of some Apron Memories of your own.
“My first love of aprons came from my Grandmothers. I would share many days with my maternal grandmother. My granny wouldn’t begin making those homemade biscuits and gravy each morning without tying on one of her feminine uniforms.
“Her aprons were stitched with love and often patched when worn. I would get my apron (one of hers that was tied around my waist many times to fit) and stand in a chair and help her make biscuits. My paternal grandmother always wore pretty aprons too. She handsewed her own and each of the women in the family several through the year. Ma passed away in 1984 just before Christmas.
“I opened her Christmas present to me after returning home from her funeral and cried for some time as I unfolded the two precious aprons that she had made me with her hands, not knowing that they would be the last. I have them in my “treasure chest”.
“My other prize in there is the apron that I made my granny that she wore many times making those biscuits and it still has the flour on it. She was rushed to the hospital that morning with a heart attack and the floured apron was left on her counter.
“One of my favorite memories with Mother is that she always wears her Thanksgiving Apron, it’s a very pretty one as she prepares her share of our Thanksgiving dinner. I now have many, many aprons some of which I have made and purchased for my daughter as I taught her too cook and clean, she’s eighteen now, and just last month I purchased a mini one for my four year old niece that has begun to sit on “Aunt Sissy’s” cabinets and learn to make those biscuits.
“Both of my grandmothers are now with my Lord, as they also accepted him as Savior and helped me memorize the 23 Psalm when I was small. I too have accepted Jesus as my Savior and am looking forward to seeing them again and telling them that I kept up the loving tradition of those precious feminine uniforms - the apron.”
