I have been pleasantly surprised by American Idols recently having guests and contestants singing Christian songs. Last week, Dolly Parton sang “Jesus and Gravity.” I was so impressed with her message. She told Ryan - “You’ve got Simon - I’ve got Jesus!” And before she sang, American Bandstand winners, the Clark Brothers, sang a funky version or “This Little Light of Mine.”
This week, the contestants sang on both Wednesday and Thursday nights “Shout to the Lord.” What a surprise! I am always glad when a mainstream show and especially one as popular as American Idol promotes the gospel. I am, however, trying to figure out what this means as far as our culture. Is “Jesus” becoming popular in mainstream secular culture? It’s something to think about.
