Butterfly Eggs - Day 5

Five days ago my sweet little girls spent the afternoon chasing butterflies with their butterfly nets. They had a very productive day and caught several butterflies and skippers and moths. We learned in our science book, Flying Creatures of the Fifth Day that butterflies have striped antennas and skippers have “hooks” on the end of their antennas. So, as usual we placed the butterflies in a jar to watch them for a while before letting them go.

To our delight we discovered eggs in our jar after we let the butterflies go! We are not sure which butterfly or moth or skipper laid them, but oh how exciting! We are documenting the experience in our nature journals. I wish I had taken a photo of the eggs on the first day, but I didn’t. They were a bright spring green color. On Day four the eggs changed to a brown color. Here is a photo of the eggs:

This morning the girls went out in search of butterfly eggs on leaves and came back inside very excited with several leaves with eggs!

And, I thought I would share another photo of our beautiful male House Finch. House Finch

Two days ago we watched as 6 Hawks Turkey Vultures* were flying about above our yard. I managed to capture this wonderful (I think) photo! The sky was so blue that day and the bird flew right over us.

*Thanks to Jodi, who commented and pointed out that this looked like a turkey vulture and I think she is right! We are new to this bird watching hobby. I love my field guide, but can’t always 100% identify the birds we see.

Hi. I’m usually a lurker, not sure when I subbed or how I found you, but I wanted to mention that your “hawks” look to me like turkey vultures, especially since they were in a group (which hawks don’t travel in). I think that turkey vultures are awesome, though, so the photo is just as cool.

    Have a great weekend!
